Periorbital

Eyelids are a vital structure that serves to protect the eyeball. It helps to clean, lubricate and protect the cornea. Other than functional aspects eyelid structure and position is very important for the beauty of our eye and face.

There are different types of periorbital surgeries depending on the part of the eye which is to be corrected. It encompasses operations on the eyelids, the periorbital area of the face, the orbits, and the lacrimal system.

Ectropian :

This is a condition in which the upper or lower eyelid is contracted and black-coloured pearls remain exposed, which may lead to dryness of the eyes. This can be corrected with a local skin flap or conjunctiva / skin graft.

Ptosis :

Ptosis means drooping of the upper eyelid. It can be either congenital or acquired. Both pose a cosmetic blemish to the patient Acquired aponeurotic ptosis is often a common aging change, leading to sleepy or droopy eyes. Normally eyelid covers 1.5 to 2 mm of upper corneal margin more than that will hamper vision. Usually patient tilts his head to improve his vision. Surgery is performed depending on the lid movement in the front gaze & downward gaze.

Blepharoplasty:

Baggy / sagging upper & lower eyelid may be because of a weak orbital septum or excessive deposits of fats. This can be corrected with an inconspicuous incision as a day-care procedure. Local anaesthesia is given and surgery may take 1-2 hours.

Side Effects

  • Minimal bruising.
  • Swelling - Ice packs accelerate the resolution of swelling.

Post Surgery Precautions

  • Cold fomentation, ice packs (3–4 times/day).
  • Protect the treated area from direct sunlight exposure for at least 1 week.
  • Avoid lifting heavy weights.
  • Consumption of blood thinners.
  • Sunscreens should be used to avoid post-surgery scar pigmentation and irregularities.
  • Head elevation while sleeping. This helps to reduce swelling and edema after surgery.
  • Avoid using eye makeup for 10–14 days after surgery.
